MINOT - A 24-year-old man from this city who died attempting to save a drowning girl has been named a recipient of the Carnegie Medal.
Eric Hurst, of Ventura, Calif., drowned in July, 2002 in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in northeastern Minnesota.
The Carnegie Hero Fund Commission gave the medals out this week to 15 people who performed heroic acts. Hurst and three others who got the award died while attempting to save the lives of others.
Hurst graduated from Minot High School. He drowned while trying to save a 17-year-old camper from the currents of the Basswood River. Attempts to revive both failed. Hurst was working as a canoe trip guide.
