MINOT (AP) - A deer crossing sign was put up on the front door of an assisted living center after a white-tailed deer raced through while residents were eating breakfast.

"We're happy nobody was walking in the halls," said Edgewood Vista Administrator Becky Rortvedt. "Everybody was sitting in there eating. So he went right by these (breakfast) tables," she said.

The deer crashed through a window in the assisted living center shortly after 8 a.m., Monday, then ran through a breakfast area, through a hallway, and eventually left by crashing through a door with a push-bar type release.

Other than the window, the four-point buck did little damage to the center, and no one was injured.

A staff member put a sign declaring "Deer crossing" on the front door next to the broken window, drawing chuckles.

"We were in the dining room eating breakfast, and it was just like, 'Everybody stay in their seat!'" said Cindy Phelps, who was working at the center Monday morning.

"One of the staff members got on the intercom and called out, 'Deer in the building,'" Rortvedt said, laughing. "Then when he let himself out, they got on again and said, 'The deer has exited the building.'"

Helen Ohmart said she was cleaning part of the center when the deer came through.

"And the window went boom! And the deer came through and I screamed," Ohmart said. "I was surprised, I didn't know what was going on," she said. "I just stood back, waiting for him to go by, and he went."

One resident was not sure at first what she had seen.

"Usually I get ready for breakfast kind of early and I go out and sit in that rocker out there (in the hall just outside her room) and wait for breakfast to start," Evelyn Anderson said. "All of a sudden, this fast-moving animal went by, and it was too big for a dog, I thought. And here it was the deer."

Staff members said the deer was in the building only a short time.

"He was running fast," Phelps said. "What a way to start your Monday morning. I bet it will be the talk of Edgewood for quite awhile."
