Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani plans to visit Fargo on Nov. 14, his North Dakota campaign chairman says.
Kevin Cramer, who is a North Dakota public service commissioner, said he believed the former New York mayor would hold a Fargo fundraiser. He hopes there will be a separate event to allow the general public a chance to hear him speak.
Cramer said he believed the events will take place over the noon hour. Many details remain to be worked out, he said.
"It is obviously very significant for us to have Rudy to come here," Cramer said Monday. "Clearly, having the candidate himself come to the state, look people in the eye, hear their concerns and ask for their support is a tremendous advantage … It makes my job a lot easier as his advocate here on the ground."
Giuliani would be the first major Republican presidential candidate to visit North Dakota this year. A Democratic presidential hopeful, Ohio U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich, campaigned in Fargo on Sept. 12.
Giuliani finished second to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney last Friday during a North Dakota Republican presidential straw poll in Bismarck.
Romney got 29 percent of the votes, while Giuliani received 22 percent. Fred Thompson (21 percent) and John McCain (14 percent) finished third and fourth. About 250 party activists attended the straw poll, and vote totals weren't disclosed.
Giuliani does not personally take part in straw polls, said Cramer, who called Giuliani's showing in the North Dakota event impressive.
North Dakota is one of more than 20 states that is having a presidential caucus or primary on Feb. 5. Both North Dakota Republicans and Democrats are holding presidential preference caucuses on that day.
Giuliani has a North Dakota headquarters in Fargo, and has hired Jason Stverak, a former state Republican Party director, as his top aide.
Giuliani also is scheduled to appear in Sioux Falls, S.D., on Nov. 14, to hold a fundraiser and speak at the South Dakota Law Enforcement Game Feed, an annual event that raises money for charity.
