LAKEVILLE, Minn. (AP) - The Lakeville Senior Center has a hit on its hands.
The center teamed with the local Red Hat Society to publish a pinup calendar featuring 70- to 82-year-old local seniors in outfits ranging from swimsuits to red leather jackets with Harley-Davidson motorcycles in tow.
The women were inspired by the movie "Calendar Girls," in which rich, refined Englishwomen in their 50s pose nude.
But you won't find any nude shots in this $10 calendar, which is selling like hotcakes. The 750 original calendars ordered are almost sold out, and a second edition is being printed. Family, friends and local businesses - from gas stations to flower shops - are among those snatching up the calendars.
The women even held a calendar signing.
"It felt nice getting out of our shells," said Sylvia Doerr, 76, of Lakeville, who is featured in December wearing a Santa Claus hat posing with St. Nick.
Linda Walter, Lakeville Senior Center coordinator, came up with the calendar idea as a way to raise money for the center.
So far, more than $7,000 has come in for center activities such as day trips.
But Walter said it wasn't easy persuading the women to become pinup models.
"A lot of these women didn't know if they wanted their pictures in the calendar," Walter said. "They were worried about how they would look."
The women belong to the Red Hat Society, a California-based national organization that gathers women 50 years and older to have fun together while dressing in red hats and gloves and purple clothing. Since the organization started four years ago, it has ballooned to 15,000 chapters, including the Lakeville one that debuted last year.
The calendars have not only raised money for the senior center, but also built self-esteem for the women involved by breaking stereotypes and showing them in a different light, Walter said.
"It was fun showing my daughter and grandchildren I can do something outrageous and that I can be hip," said Mary Watts, 80, of Lakeville, who posed for the October page in a red hat and purple top.
January model Patti Wallin, 76, smiled proudly as she recalled how her granddaughter thought she was "awesome" for posing in the calendar.
The calendar has been so successful that another one is in the works for 2006. That also will benefit the 1,000 members of the Lakeville Senior Center.
"Even though we're seniors, (that) doesn't mean we can't make an impact," said Jan Smith, 66, a June and July model.
