MOORHEAD, Minn. (AP) - Authorities have identified the 21-year-old pedestrian who died after being struck by a train in downtown Moorhead over the weekend.
He was Adam Bertek, 21, a Concordia College student from Moorhead, police said.
Witnesses say Bertek approached the railroad tracks shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday as an eastbound Burlington Northern Santa Fe train passed. Police said he was struck by the engine of a second train traveling west.
Bertek's body was sent to the Ramsey County medical examiner's office for an autopsy.
Bertek was a former Cobber football player and a 2004 graduate of West Fargo High School.
His father said he was nearly finished with his studies at Concordia.
"You never saw him without a smile on his face," said Nick Reinisch, 22, a Concordia senior who played on the football team with Bertek.
"He was that type of guy."
