FARGO (AP) - Organizers of a petition drive aiming to fight a plan to move a Ten Commandments monument from the City Hall mall say they have enough signatures to put it to a public vote.
The sponsors need at least 2,850 verified signatures for the City Commission to consider an initiated ordinance that would ban the city from moving any marker or monument that's been on city property for 40 or more years.
Petition sponsor Randy Thorson said about 3,300 signatures had been gathered by late Thursday afternoon, including those gathered during a daylong rally at the monument.
Thorson said petitions are still in circulation, and signatures will be accepted through Monday.
"We really want to send a message to the commission," he said.
Fargo City Commissioner Tim Mahoney on Wednesday said he will ask for a revote Monday on the commission's 3-2 decision last week to move the Ten Commandments marker off the City Hall mall.
