YORK (AP) - A fire at a small biodiesel plant in York has the mayor questioning the plant's in-town location.
All American Biodiesel opened the $1.5 million plant in a former school in the Benson County town about two years ago. Last week, a fire destroyed one of four buildings at the plant.
Mayor Randy Silliman questioned the plant's location when it was being built.
The state fire marshal's office is investigating the cause of the fire. Silliman says the equipment inside the building was destroyed.
The company could not be reached for comment on Tuesday.
Silliman says 22 people live in York. The plant is on the east side of town, and about 200 feet from Silliman's home.
He says residents on the west end of town were in favor of the plant when it was proposed.
"I am for renewable fuels because I farm too, but I don't think towns should let these be built in city limits next to homes," Silliman said. "I just want to do it in a safe manner. This was not a safe manner."
Silliman said there are three other homes near the plant. A blacksmith shop, fertilizer plant and an elevator also are nearby.
