MINOT (AP) - Military authorities on Saturday searched for a Minot Air Force Base airman who went missing while stationed at the Pacific island of Guam.
The person was not immediately identified, and the military would not say if it was a man or a woman. Base officials said in a statement that the person and another airman were swimming off Tarague Beach about 11:15 a.m. Friday when the incident happened.
The other airman was injured and taken to a Navy hospital. Capt. James Bressendorff, a Minot base spokesman, said in an interview Saturday afternoon that details on the injury and how it happened were not immediately being released.
Both airmen were deployed to Anderson Air Base in Guam in support of the war on terror, and had been there about four months, Bressendorff said.
Members of the 36th Civil Engineer Squadron fire rescue team and the Navy's Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 25 were involved in the search. Bressendorff said both units are based at Anderson.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to our missing and injured airmen and their loved ones," Col. Eldon Woodie, commander of the Minot base's 5th Bomb Wing, said in a statement. "We're going to stay positive and hopeful that our valued team member will be found unharmed."
Bressendorff said he did not know how long the search would continue.
