North Dakota's top horse racing regulator has resigned.

Randy Blaseg's departure was disclosed at a state Racing Commission meeting on Tuesday. The commission regulates live horse racing in North Dakota and off-track wagering on races.

Blaseg couldn't be reached for comment. He was hired in December 2005.

The commission's operations have been harshly criticized in the North Dakota Legislature. Some lawmakers have favored abolishing the agency, but a proposal to do so was defeated during the 2009 session.

Bismarck attorney Pat Weir is the commission's chairman, and he said Blaseg agreed to quit.
