SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - The federal prosecutor said 11 people pleaded not guilty Wednesday to trespassing after unfurling a banner on part of Mount Rushmore National Memorial.
U.S. Attorney Marty Jackley said each person was also charged with a second misdemeanor of climbing on Mount Rushmore. All were released on their own recognizance after a court hearing.
The environmental group Greenpeace said in a statement that its members unfurled a 2,300 square-foot banner from the top of the mountain calling for an end to global warming. The banner read, "America honors leaders not politicians: Stop Global Warming."
