FORT TOTTEN (AP) - The Spirit Lake Sioux tribe is buying land that was part of the tribe's original reservation, and county officials worry about the loss of tax revenues.

Since 1975, the tribe has reacquired 50,000 acres of land. Tribal realty office director Joann Smith says most of the land is rented or enrolled in a federal conservation program.

The Benson County Commission was recently notified that another 3,500 acres of land is being put into federal trust. It will be exempt from local taxes.

Most of the land is in Benson County, and County Commission Chairman Michael Steffan says that means local tax losses.

The reservation included 245,000 acres when it was established in 1867.
