FARGO (AP) - Fargo-based Scheels plans to break ground Friday in Sparks, Nev., on what the company says will be the world's largest all-sports store.
The 248,000-square-foot store is expected to open in October 2008 with more than 300 employees.
Scheels opened a Fargo store and adjacent corporate headquarters in July 2006. The project included nearly 200,000 square feet of retail space and cost about $40 million.
Special attractions at the Sparks store will include two 16,000-gallon aquariums, a 35-foot-tall wildlife taxidermy mountain and a 16-car Ferris wheel.
Scheels is not disclosing the cost of the store in Sparks, a city of about 85,000 people near Reno.
Officials are planning a major retail tourist project known as Legends at Sparks Marina. It is to include a 1,000-room hotel, a casino and a baseball stadium for a minor league team.
Scheels has 22 stores in seven states.
