GRAND FORKS (AP) - University of North Dakota officials are taking a look at the school's policy that prohibits unmarried couples from living together.

The state's ban on cohabitation went off the books this month.

Since statehood, it has been a sex crime in North Dakota for a man and woman to live together as if they were married.

UND housing officials are now looking at the school's policy to see if it might be antiquated or too restrictive, said Judy Sargent, director of residence services.

The school has prohibited single students of the opposite sex under one roof in its residence halls and university apartments.

"It's a good time to review it and to start having some conversations about the current need of students as well as certain societal expectations," Sargent said.

Sargent said any change would most likely affect the school's university apartments and other non-dorm housing.
