MICHIGAN (AP) - The only grocery store in the northeastern North Dakota community of Michigan will reopen.

The store closed in May when the owners moved to South Dakota. Its shelves were bare for the first time in more than a century.

Mayor Allen Orwick says the Michigan Job Development Authority has reached an agreement with Fred Wangler, who operates several grocery stores in eastern North Dakota.

Under the agreement, the Michigan Job Development Authority will own the building and Wangler will be allowed to lease the space at no cost. The store could reopen in by Oct. 1.

The community raised about $140,000 to reopen the store, with about half of the money coming from a federal grant.

About 17 Michigan-area families contributed $1,000 each to the effort.
