PETERSBURG (AP) - The body of an 85-year-old woman reported missing by her family was found in a wetlands area about 75 yards from her car along U.S. 2, the Nelson County sheriff says.
Flora Young, of West Fargo, was reported missing Saturday night, West Fargo police said.
Nelson County Sheriff Kelly Janke said he had no indication of a crime but the body was being sent to the state medical examiner's office in Bismarck to determine the cause of death.
West Fargo police said Young's family last spoke with her Friday afternoon on the phone. A Nelson County officer on routine patrol spotted her car a mile east of Petersburg about 6:45 p.m. Friday, Janke said.
"She was pulled off to the shoulder of the roadway," Janke said Sunday. The officer stopped to ask her if she needed help, he said.
"The only thing she indicated was that she was getting tired and had pulled off the road," Janke said.
After the missing person report came in Saturday, authorities began searching for her, he said. A ground search turned up no trace of her Saturday night in an area that includes Conservation Reserve Program land and wetlands, the sheriff said.
Authorities said her car was locked with her purse inside.
The Border Patrol and search dogs were called in, Janke said. Eventually, one of the dogs led authorities to the area where the body was found, about 2 p.m. Sunday, the sheriff said.
