Robert Schaible, a former deputy secretary of state who was working as a lobbyist for an outdoors group, died after collapsing at a Capitol legislative hearing.
Schaible, 62, died Thursday night at a Bismarck hospital, Secretary of State Al Jaeger said Friday. His funeral was scheduled for Tuesday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Bismarck.
Schaible was answering a question during a House Natural Resources Committee hearing Thursday when he fell to the floor, lawmakers said.
Schaible was working during the Legislature as a lobbyist for the North Dakota Outdoor Heritage Coalition. He was speaking on a bill to increase the number of mule deer hunting licenses for nonresident sportsmen who hunt with bow and arrow.
The committee's vice chairman, Rep. Todd Porter, R-Mandan, is a paramedic and an owner of an ambulance company. He rushed to give Schaible first aid, witnesses said, and stayed with him as more help arrived.
Highway Patrol officers brought emergency medical equipment from the agency's Capitol office, which is near the hearing room. An ambulance rushed Schaible to a hospital, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit.
Schaible also published an almanac of North Dakota sports.
