FARGO - Police say a woman foiled an alleged abduction attempt by secretly dialing 911 on her cell phone after her former boyfriend ordered her to drive on the interstate.
Terry Higdem, 27, of Fargo, was charged in East Central District Court Monday with felonious restraint and terrorizing. Higdem's lawyer, Dennis Fisher, was not immediately available for comment.
Court documents show that Higdem threatened Stevie Akason, 21, of Fargo, after the two of them went to dinner and a movie Sunday night. Dispatchers allegedly heard Higdem tell Akason he was taking her hostage.
Court documents show that Higdem told Akason, "Do you want to die tonight, (because) I want to die."
Police said Akason gave dispatchers clues by mentioning landmarks along the way. An officer eventually stopped the car near Interstate 29 south of town and Akason confirmed she had dialed 911.
Higdem was arrested without incident about 9:30 p.m., police said.
"It was just great teamwork between the officer, the dispatcher and the victim," Fargo Police Sgt. Jeff Skuza said.
Akason told police she was trying to be friendly to Higdem because the two of them had a child together. Akason said Higdem pulled her hair at one point, but she was not injured.
Higdem has numerous charges in state court, including domestic violence, drug possession, criminal mischief, and violation of a protection order.
Skuza said newer cell phones have the capability of uploading GPS coordinates when a 911 call is made, but Akason used an older model.
"They had to do it the old-fashioned way," Skuza said.
