VALLEY CITY. (AP) - The manager of the Valley City Town and Country Club wants more than birdies and eagles on the golf course. Todd Christiansen also wants to organize a deer hunt there.
Christiansen said deer are destroying trees and flower beds on the course and the nearby neighborhood.
"And in the winter they're all over, urinating on the grounds and damaging the green with their hooves," he said. "All we can do is go out and herd them with a golf cart."
Christiansen has asked the City Commission to consider a special bow hunt for deer on the country club grounds.
"We've kind of become hostage to the deer," Commissioner Jon Wagar said. "Obviously, you can't have a hundred guys with guns running around shooting deer. But we've become so overprotective we've got dozens, maybe hundreds, in town."
Commissioners have directed Valley City Administrator Jon Cameron to form a committee to look into a special deer season.
Last year, the city asked the state Game and Fish Department to establish a special bow hunt within the city limits, similar to special seasons held in Bismarck and Fargo.
Wildlife Division Chief Randy Kreil said Valley City does not have enough big public parcels of land within city limits to hold a hunt.
"The best we could come up with was to create a zone around Valley City and allow extra deer licenses for hunting on private property, but only if the owners agreed," Kreil said.
Not enough landowners liked the idea at the time, he said.
"Nothing precludes private landowners or cities from having special hunts during bow season for eligible people," Kreil said.
