BUFFALO (AP) - Hazel Von Bank says she had just fallen asleep when she heard a crack in the roof. She found a tree on top of her house and another tree alongside it, after a storm system packing heavy rain and high winds moved through North Dakota on Sunday night and early Monday.
"It was like tornado winds because everything was swirling around," Von Bank said. "It took down a lot of trees in Buffalo."
The owner of the Buffalo Farm Supply grain elevator, Ron Killoran, said his business was a mess, with grain bins, dryers and other pieces of equipment knocked down.
"It has done a lot of damage to us," Killoran said Monday. "It doesn't look very good."
No injuries were reported in the town of about 200, about 40 miles west of Fargo.
In Ellendale, winds of more than 80 mph toppled two 150-foot-tall grain bins at the town's elevator Sunday night, said Charlie Russell, Dickey County's emergency manager. One of the grain bins fell on a power line, knocking out power for several hours,
"It was a freak storm," Russell said. "It was 10 minutes of absolute hell, with a capital 'H,'" he said.
"Trees are down all over town - I don't think there is a homeowner that was not affected," Russell said.
Most of the damage in the town of about 1,500 people was minor, and no injuries were reported, Russell said.
"There are 20 to 30 big trees that were blown down, roots and all," he said. "The root holes are so big you can hide a small Volkswagen in them."
Angela Cossette said the storm ripped off part of the roof of her home, about 15 miles southwest of Fargo.
"So much wind," Cossette said.
"I didn't venture in my back bedroom until a little while … and when I went in there, I could see outside," she said.
A tornado hit the farm almost exactly two years ago, damaging outbuildings and equipment. And earlier this spring, this spring, about 160 acres surrounding Cossette's farm were flooded by the Wild Rice River, leaving most of her wheat under water.
