WILLISTON (AP) - A sprinkler system helped control a fire at the Economart grocery store, officials said. No one was hurt.

"The sprinkler system did save the building," Williston Fire Chief Jim Jarland said.

A dozen Economart workers got out of the store and called for help about 3 a.m., Monday, Jarland said. The fire apparently started in a storage area, he said.

"We saw smoke coming out of the loading area from the west end. We were informed that it was coming out from the break room upstairs," Jarland said.

"The sprinkler head had gone off. It got most of the fire," he said.

"We found boxes for storing doughnuts smoldering," the fire chief said. "The fire was contained to an area 15 feet wide and 5 feet deep."

Jarland estimated at least $2,000 in structural damage to the store.

Firefighters doused hot spots and fanned out the smoke from the store until about 4:30 a.m., but they had to return about 6 a.m., to tackle hot spots on the roof, Jarland said.

"There was some chip board (insulation) smoldering. We took pieces of the trim off the roof," Jarland said.
