MINOT (AP) - A police officer here was justified in shooting a man, the city's police chief said.

Chief Dan Draovitch said Bruce Duane Rudland, 24, was shot in the right arm after he allegedly ignored repeated orders to stop approaching the officer and his former girlfriend early Sunday morning.

"My estimation is that she did the right thing," said Draovitch said of the officer.

Rudland has been charged with disobeying a movement control order and burglary, for allegedly breaking into his ex-girlfriend's home.

Rudland underwent surgery at Trinity Hospital, where he was still a patient Monday, Draovitch said.

Rudland was not armed but a weapon was found at the scene, Draovitch said. He would not identify the weapon.

Draovitch said the shooting was the result of a domestic stalking incident. He said the female officer was escorting the woman to her home when Rudland came charging out of the darkness.

The officer ordered Rudland to stop and shot him when he refused, Draovitch said. The police officer said she could only see a shadow moving toward her, he said.

Draovitch would not identify the officer. He said she has been placed on paid administrative leave while the police department conducts an internal investigation.
