GRAND FORKS (AP) - The two men charged in the shooting deaths of a Grand Forks father and son seven years ago are now in custody in Grand Forks.
Bail was set at $1 million for Billy Joe Valdez Aguero, 30, who appeared in court Wednesday via interactive television. The same bail amount was set for Joseph Moncada, 26, earlier this week.
Aguero and Moncada each are charged with two counts of murder and two counts of conspiracy to commit murder. Grand Forks County took custody of Moncada late last week. He had been in a Minnesota prison on a drug conviction.
Aguero and Moncada are charged in the deaths of Robert Belgarde, 40, and his son, Damien, 19, whose bodies were found on a gravel road south of Grand Forks in September 2001. Authorities said the men were shot several times in what appeared to be drug-related killings.
Aguero told Judge Joel Medd on Wednesday that his family lives in San Antonio. He said he had worked at seasonal farm jobs in the Grand Forks area years ago, and was in prison from 2002 until May 2008. He also said he had no attorney.
Medd set bail at $250,000 for each charge against Aguero, citing his lack of ties to the community, an earlier bail jumping conviction and the nature of the charges.
Preliminary hearings for both men are set for Nov. 12.
