RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - An Eagle Butte man has pleaded guilty to assaulting a state trooper last year.
Jeremy G. DeCoteau, 28, also admitted to being a habitual offender, which means he could get a sentence of life in prison.
Under a plea agreement with the state, however, prosecutors will ask for 35 years. The South Dakota Attorney General's Office says prosecutors will ask that the sentence run at the same time as a federal sentence DeCoteau already is serving for a different assault.
The assault took place during a traffic stop near Mobridge. The trooper suffered minor injuries.
He originally was charged in state court with attempted murder, aggravated assault and escape in connection with the March 18, 2007, assault on Highway Patrol Trooper Kevin Kerr. Those charges were later dropped.
DeCoteau made his initial appearance Tuesday on a refiled charge of aggravated assault when he pleaded guilty to assaulting Kerr.
No sentencing date has been set.
