FARGO (AP) - A former petroleum industry worker is accused of stealing gas by using a key to open up the pump and punching in a code to activate the machine.
Roger Smith Jr. of Fargo is charged with misdemeanor theft. Authorities said the thefts occurred at least four times last month at a convenience store near Moorhead, Minn.
Prosecutor Jenny Samarzja said the 40-year-old Smith used his knowledge of the industry to use a code that switched the pump to a maintenance mode. That allowed him to pump gas without paying for it.
Smith faces up to 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine. His first court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 3.
