FARGO (AP) - Thunderstorms dumped heavy rain and hail in the Fargo area early Friday, One home was struck by lightning, but no one was hurt.

"The lightning strike knocked a big hole in my roof," said Bruce Hager, who lives in south Fargo. Insulation was falling out on the floor, he said.

Hager said he was standing in his living room when he heard a large boom.

"I saw sparks flying. I knew we had been hit by lightning, but I didn't know how bad it was, so we called the fire department," he said.

Assistant Fire Chief Larry Schuh said light fixtures were knocked out of the ceiling, but the fire did not spread. No smoke or flames were visible when fire crews arrived.

Fargo Fire Capt. Bob Cuchna said the lightning pushed recessed lighting fixtures on the second floor a few inches out of their holes.

Firefighters put a tarp over about a 4-foot by 10-foot area of the roof, Cuchna said.

The storm went through about 3 a.m.

Most of the Fargo-Moorhead area got at least pea- to marble-size hail, and some areas reported baseball-size hail. Streets and sidewalks were littered with green leaves knocked off by the falling ice pellets, and cars had dents from the hail.

Some streets were under water, either because the leaves were clogging storm sewer intakes or the sewer system couldn't keep up with the heavy rainfall, said Lee Anderson, a maintenance supervisor for Fargo Public Works.

A lightning strike also was blamed for a fire that destroyed a garage in Dalton, southeast of Fergus Falls, Minn., around 1 a.m.
