More than 250 local government agencies in North Dakota will share about $2.8 million to deal with the impact of energy development.
The North Dakota Energy Development Impact Office says it is awarding 283 grants to 257 groups. It got requests totaling $35 million.
Director Jeff Engleson says much of the money goes to townships for road work, and to fire and ambulance services. Last year, he approved about $3 million in grants.
The grant money comes from the state's oil and gas production tax. Engleson says his office met with 377 groups seeking grants and traveled more than 5,000 miles to assess their requests.
The Legislature has capped the grants at $6 million per two-year budget cycle.
