DICKINSON (AP) - A man from this city who authorities say broke into a home and shot another man in the leg with a rifle was hospitalized in Bismarck after being shot by a police officer.

The condition of Joel Wetzel, 59, was not known Tuesday afternoon, Police Lt. David Wallace said.

Wetzel was charged with burglary and reckless endangerment in the incident, which police said happened around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday. He could face up to 15 years in prison if convicted on both charges.

The four police officers involved in the incident were put on paid administrative leave while the Stark County sheriff's office and state crime bureau investigate the shooting, Wallace said. The officer who did the shooting was not named.

Authorities did not immediately release a possible motive for the shooting the officers responded to. Assistant Stark County State's Attorney James Hope, who filed the criminal complaint against Wetzel, did not return a telephone call Tuesday afternoon seeking comment.

Police Capt. Stewart Stenberg said in a statement that Wetzel crawled through a window of a house where Patricia Ewoniuk, 53, and Arnold Sickler, 56, were living.

Wetzel fired the rifle he was carrying through a bedroom door and hit Sickler in the leg, Stenberg said. Wallace said Sickler's condition was not known Tuesday afternoon.

Ewoniuk called police, and the four officers who responded confronted Wetzel outside the home and ordered him to drop his rifle. Stenberg said Wetzel refused, then pointed the rifle at an officer. Another officer then shot Wetzel with a shotgun in his upper right side.

Police did not elaborate on the relationship between Ewoniuk and Sickler or on whether those two knew Wetzel.
