GRAND FORKS (AP) - Officials say a new security system is in effect on state campuses and students have the option of signing up for it.

The system called NotiFind is aimed at allowing campus officials to notify students, faculty and staff members of emergencies, such as a shooting or a fire, through e-mail, text-messages and phone calls.

University of North Dakota Police Chief Duane Czapiewski said 55 percent of the students statewide had signed up for the system as of Tuesday. He said faculty and staff members are required to sign up for the network while students can opt out. UND is covering the cost of students' registration, he said.

Czapiewski said the new NotiFind system is one of many safety measures at UND. "This isn't designed to prevent an incident," he said.
