FARGO (AP) - Xcel Energy plans to replace the brand of pipe blamed in a Fargo house explosion that injured 13 people last month.

Xcel says in a statement on its Web site that it will start replacing the 13.5 miles of gas main and about 1,300 service lines to North Dakota homes and businesses next year.

"As part of our regular maintenance process, we plan to replace all the Century pipe in our North Dakota natural gas system," spokeswoman Bonnie Lund said. "We will meet a project completion date of 2010 or sooner."

Lund said the lines are within the utility's Fargo and Grand Forks service areas. She said she did not have an estimate on replacement costs.

The federal government warned in 1999 that Century Utility Products Inc., pipe installed from 1970 to 1973 could fail due to poor resistance to cracking.

The underground pipe serving the home unit that exploded in south Fargo was manufactured by Century in 1972, Xcel said in a report to the U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration.
