WILLISTON - A fifth-grade student here surprised his mom by keeping his cool and helping his choking younger brother.

When Evitt Flesness began choking on a piece of deer sausage, his mom, Tina, couldn't get him breathing again. Big brother Garret stepped in and applied the Heimlich maneuver.

"Before I could think, Garret walked over calmly, put his hands right where he was supposed to … squeezed and it popped right out in my hands," Tina said.

Garret told his mom that he read about the maneuver at school.

"It amazes me … it still amazes me, he didn't panic or anything, just walked behind him and did it," Tina said.

"I just wanted him to be OK," Garret said. "The next day I told my teacher and told the whole class."
