FARGO (AP) - Fargo commissioners have voted down a request from the Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch to rezone about 50 acres south of the city so the ranch consolidate its programs for troubled young people.

The commission voted 3-1 against rezoning.

Neighbors in the area had opposed the plan, saying they worried about runaways and lower property values.

Police Chief Keith Ternes said vandalism and other crimes by the juveniles is "virtually nonexistent."

More than 60 people attended Monday night's commission meeting. Many of the opponents wore red shirts.

Tim Eissinger, the vice president of residential services for the Boys Ranch, said he worries the ranch will face the same opposition in other areas.
