FARGO (AP) - North Dakota State University is reporting a record number of freshmen on campus. At the other end of the state, Dickinson State officials are trying to fill a big demand for dorm space.

NDSU reported a head count enrollment of 12,871 students Tuesday, a 5.3 percent increase from last year. The preliminary freshman total is a record 2,648, or 473 more than last year.

Prakash Mathew, vice president for student affairs, said NDSU's enrollment may come close to 13,000 this fall.

With higher rental prices in the Dickinson area, Dickinson State officials are seeing more demand for on-campus housing.

"We noticed, last April, an increased number of returning students, not necessarily signing up for housing, but inquiring about university housing," said Hal Haynes, the school's vice president for development. "Students started telling us that rental property in town had become cost prohibitive. The rates have skyrocketed for rental properties."
