MINOT (AP) - City Council members have questions about a proposal to put garbage from the city of Devils Lake in their city's landfill.
Devils Lake now uses a Grand Forks landfill that will close at the end of 2007. Devils Lake officials propose to bring an estimated 5,280 tons of garbage a year to Minot.
Minot officials say the city would get $143,880 a year for taking the Devils Lake waste. They indicated earlier that the Minot landfill has room.
Council members raised more questions Monday.
Alderman Ernest Medalen wondered how accepting the Devils Lake waste would affect the life of the Minot landfill. Devils Lake would be charged the same rate as Minot residents, and that might not be enough to warrant giving up landfill space, he said.
"I know we need to be a good neighbor, but I wonder if we need to be this good of a neighbor without taking a look at it," Medalen said.
Alderman Bob Miller said neighbors help in the short term, but he said Devils Lake should have another long-term plan.
"I am really troubled about moving this waste across four counties," he said.
Alderman Ron Boen said he could not support accepting the Devils Lake waste.
"Let's just use some common sense and say no," he said.
