MINOT (AP) - A new city ordinance may include a longer list of banned animals.

Minot animal control officer Dick Schnell is drafting the animal ordinance, after checking other communities.

Minot's current ordinance bans wolves, wolf hybrids and pit bulls or any dog that "displays the characteristics of the pit bull dog." Dobermans, Rottweilers and blue heelers are not specifically defined as vicious animals.

"We are seeing more and more cities and municipalities adding certain breeds to their prohibited list," Schnell said.

State law classifies animals as livestock, domestic and prohibited. The challenge is to define domestic animals.

"We had a lady that wanted to bring goats into town. Pot-bellied pigs is another example," said Schnell. "Is a horse no longer livestock? Some say they are domesticated pets."

In Webster, S.D., officials drafted an animal control ordinance that bans everything from pit bulls, hyenas, and wart hogs to sharks, squirrels and wombats.

"As goofy as it may look, it's coming to that. It really is," Schnell said.
