FARGO (AP) - Cass County Sheriff Paul Laney is forming a special 18-member team to handle any trouble at the county jail.

Laney said he hopes to have the Corrections Emergency Response Team trained by next year, headed by Sgt. Al Kulesa, a juvenile detention director.

"It's really designed a lot after a SWAT team but it's utilized in house, inside of a corrections facility," Laney said.

Potential problems include inmates who become combative or who object to being moved, he said.

The jail in Fargo can hold nearly 350 prisoners.

"You look at some of the inmates we've had in the past couple of years. We've had some pretty high profile inmates on very high profile and violent charges," Laney said. "There's a lot that goes on behind the correctional walls that people don't see on a day-to-day basis."

For the special team members, "it's really just taking their training to another level," the sheriff said.
