FARGO (AP) - A West Fargo man who was convicted of killing his aunt when he was 14 years old has been sentenced to life in prison for sexually assaulting a girl under the age of 15.
In sentencing 35-year-old Duane Schaefer, Judge Wade Webb cited his criminal history, including a manslaughter conviction in juvenile court.
Prosecutors said Schaefer shot his aunt in the head and tried to burn her body in the Starkweather case.
Schaefer testified in his own defense in the Cass County sexual assault case. He said he did not remember much of what happened but said he could never commit such a crime.
He will be eligible for parole after serving 30 years.
