MINOT (AP) - The National Weather Service says there is a high likelihood of spring flooding at most points along the Souris River in north central North Dakota, though Minot residents have little to fear.
"Everything that we've seen and heard thus far indicates our channel will be able to hold the water coming through the city of Minot," said City Manager David Waind.
The weather service forecast says the Sherwood, Towner, Karlsruhe, Willow City, Bantry and Westhope areas all have a 98 percent chance of exceeding flood stage in the next 90 days. Every other point in the basin other than Minot's Broadway Bridge and the Des Lacs River at Foxholm have more than a 70 percent chance of flooding.
"Adequate moisture already exists in the snowpack across much of western North Dakota to create flood conditions in most watersheds," the report said.
The weather service said there also is a chance of localized flooding along watersheds in the Missouri and James River basins in North Dakota.
Flooding worries are worse to the east, where the weather service says Devils Lake is almost certain to rise to a record level.
The Red River Valley is likely to see significant flooding, as well.
