MINOT (AP) - A Garrison man has given a 39-star North Dakota flag to the North Dakota National Guard.

The flag commemorating North Dakota's statehood will hang in the state Guard headquarters.

The Rev. Steve Holmes of Garrison says the silk flag is more than 120 years old.

Holmes says that when North Dakota became a state in 1889 along with South Dakota, Washington and Wyoming, each of the states created its own star flag to celebrate. He said printers in North Dakota created the 39-star parade flag. Holmes said he got the one he gave to the Guard from an antique dealer in Massachusetts.
