FARGO (AP) - Cass County Sheriff Paul Laney says a boy who pulled a fire alarm at the county jail alerted officials to a flaw in the system.

The alarm pulled in the old section of the jail didn't activate the alarms in the new section, which was completed in October, Laney said.

Laney said a "very young" boy was in the lobby with his family during visitation hours earlier this month when he pulled a fire alarm.

County officials had "very frank" discussions with the fire alarm company and "demanded an explanation," Laney said.

The system was promptly fixed, he said.

Laney said the boy is not in trouble.

"We kind of owe him a lifetime supply of candy," Laney said.
