FARGO (AP) - A jury is deliberating the case of a husband and wife accused of molesting two children.
Andrew Muhle, 35, and his wife, Shannon, 31, of West Fargo, are charged with gross sexual imposition and abuse or neglect of a child.
The jury did not reach a verdict after meeting for more than five hours on Friday. Deliberations were to resume on Monday morning.
The Muhles testified that the children might have been confused by a conversation they once had about good and bad touching. The children who testified are ages 5, 7 and 9.
Andrew Muhle was accused of raping a girl who was 4 years old at the time. Shannon Muhle was accused of raping an 8-year-old boy and of failing to stop her husband from abusing the girl.
The third child, a boy who is now 7, testified that he witnessed sexual acts between Andrew Muhle and the girl.
Muhle said the older boy and a neighbor girl struck up a friendship "that developed into a sexual relationship." Social workers recommended counseling for the boy, he said, and he and his wife spoke to the three children about good and bad touches.
"We showed them by pointing" at parts of the body, Muhle said. "Our intent was to show them sexual activity was something they should do later in life.
"The only thing I can think of is they're confusing whatever they did with our conversations with them about what was appropriate and what wasn't appropriate," he said.
Under questioning by Joe Johnson, Shannon Muhle's attorney, Andrew Muhle said the 9-year-old told him the neighbor girl had taught him about sexual activity.
Shannon Muhle denied accusations that she and her husband had sex in front of the three children and said she did not molest the boy.
"I never saw Andy do anything; (the children) never said anything to me," she said. "I can't even conceive of having sex with a child."
