JAMESTOWN (AP) - Members of a group here are working on developing a "livestock corridor" with feed byproducts from a new ethanol plant and power plant.
Plans were announced in early May for a 100 million gallon ethanol plant along with an expansion of Cargill Inc.'s malt processing plant in Spiritwood, about 10 miles east of Jamestown, and a steam plant that burns coal.
Great River Energy, Cargill and the Newman Group of Jamestown are partners in the $350 million Spirit Energy Park. It is slated to break ground later this year, and the Ag-Energy and Manufacturers' roundtables are trying to broaden area business opportunities.
Pat Nygaard, business development specialist for the Jamestown-Stutsman Development Corp., said livestock feed will be a byproduct of the energy park project.
"There are so many spin-off opportunities for local businesses," he said.
A collective group known as the Ag-Energy Roundtable, which includes representatives from Foster, Stutsman, Dickey and LaMoure counties, has focused on developing a livestock corridor along U.S. Highway 281 and has begun work on a brochure.
"The ethanol plant, for example, will produce 325,000 tons of byproduct, enough to feed 60,000 head of dairy cattle," Nygaard said. "We only have 39,000 dairy cattle in North Dakota. We need to get cattle and other livestock in the area to consume the byproducts."
Cargill already makes malt pellets used for feed. The addition of more bushels of barley to its malt production will mean more pellets.
"We want to encourage livestock production to consume this feed, which otherwise will be shipped out of state," Nygaard said.
The brochure will be distributed to state agencies that send representatives to out-of-state trade shows.
"We're a mere blip on the radar screen nationally, so we need to market ourselves through the state," Nygaard said. "This is rural economic development. Livestock production has huge economic multipliers."
Nygaard said area livestock producers also are encouraged to consider expanding their operations.
