MINOT AIR FORCE BASE (AP) - The widow and daughters of a Minot Air force Base pilot killed in a 1963 crash returned to the base to honor the fallen flier.
Joan Richardson Singleton of San Antonio and two daughters unveiled a plaque Friday that contained a story and photos about Capt. William Richardson, who died in December 1963 when his F-106 Delta Dart crashed near Flasher, in southwestern North Dakota.
Friday's ceremony was held in front of Richardson Hall, a dormitory named in Richardson's honor. Family members said they were not aware until recently that a dorm was named for him.
The plaque will be placed in the dormitory, which is home to members of the 91st Missile Security Forces Squadron - many of whom attended the ceremony.
"It was a very beautiful but bittersweet ceremony. I want to thank everybody for all the work," Singleton said.
During the ceremony, Richardson's daughter, Patricia Richardson Healy of Marietta, Ga., told about her attempts to find out more about her father.
"I wanted to know about my dad as a pilot," she said.
Patricia was 2 and her sister was 13 months old when he died.
Col. Eldon Woodie, commander of the 5th Bomb Wing, spoke of the sacrifices of military families such as the Richardson family.
The Rev. Ronald Richardson, Capt. Richardson's youngest brother, said he and his brother, whom he called W.D., would have soul talks.
"When I found out that a memorial tribute was being planned for today, the thought occurred to me that perhaps W.D., after 42 years, wanted once more for folks to gather and have a little soul talk in remembrance of him," Ronald Richardson said.
The younger Richardson said one of his ambitions in life had been to fly a jet like his two brothers.
Ronald Richardson said that sometimes when he rides his motorcycle and sees a jet streaking across the sky, "Somewhere in the noise of my motorcycle and the jet overhead, I can still hear W.D.'s soul talking to me. Maybe he's having his way of saying to me, 'Go, Ron."'
