MINOT (AP) - Police are investigating the death of a man after reports he may have been pushed from the roof of a downtown cafe.

Jeffrey Eberts, 23, of Minot, died Tuesday after spending a week in and out of consciousness at a Minot hospital. The case was initially treated as an accident, Police Sgt. Jason Sundbakken said.

Homicide detectives were called into investigate after statements that Eberts may have been pushed. Sundbakken said it's a difficult assignment because the information came in several days after Eberts' body was found.

"It's so hard to gather evidence, because by then the scene was pretty well trampled," Sundbakken said.

There were no eyewitnesses to the fall, police said.

Witnesses have said Eberts was arguing with his girlfriend in the hallway of the building at about midnight after she didn't allow him inside her apartment, Sundbakken said. Eberts had apparently been drinking, police said.

Eberts' body was found late the next morning.

It's the third time in three months that homicide detectives have been called in to investigate a death. Antonio Stridiron, 31, is charged in the shooting death of Joshua Valasquez, 27, whose body was discovered early Sunday morning near a Minot park.

Police have not made any arrests in the death of Anita Knutson, who was stabbed to death in her northwest Minot apartment in early June. Minot Police Chief Jeff Balentine said national and state agencies have been called in to help with the investigation.

The events have been taxing on homicide detectives, Balentine said.

"I don't think we're in an increasing crime wave," Balentine said. "I think circumstances dictate a couple of those that we had no control over. Society itself is getting more violent. I see that as a trend throughout the United States, and unfortunately we're being a part of it here.

"The community itself is still very safe," he said. "I'm still very happy with the way things are going."
