GRAND FORKS (AP) - Residents here may have to pay about 35 percent more for trash service when the city's near-capacity landfill shuts down in two years.
The current Grand Forks landfill is slated to close in October 2008. A proposal to build a replacement in nearby Turtle River Township is being fought in court.
City officials say if a new landfill site is not found, garbage might have to be shipped to Fargo or Gwinner, at a higher cost.
The new garbage rate for Grand Forks residents when the landfill closes in 2008 would be about $15.50, said Todd Feland, city public works director.
The current residential rate is $11.45 a month.
Council members said they want to charge residents by volume to encourage recycling and conservation.
