FARGO (AP) - More than 1,000 North Dakotans have had their driver's licenses suspended after failing to make child support payments.

State Child Support Director Mike Schwindt says another 688 people are subject to losing their licenses if they don't comply with payment plans.

The 2003 Legislature gave the state Child Support Enforcement Division the power to suspend parents' driver's licenses, hunting and fishing licenses and professional licenses of those who have delinquent child support payments.

Schwindt told lawmakers recently that his office has suspended 955 licenses and judges have suspended another 63. He says it's an effective tool for getting people's attention.
