Once again a young person has returned to Bismarck with his hand out. Bismarck didn't create a teenage drinking epidemic, as Dave Herrmann claims ("No entertainment spots here for teens," Sept. 14). Lack of parental guidance created that.
I can't find where it is written that the city should provide entertainment to young people. Bismarck has tried several times to provide some type of place for young people, but they were either vandalized, destroyed or not supported.
I also can't find anything prohibiting young people and all their peers from forming a plan, doing a feasibility study and looking for a site for a project they want and are willing to support. Once they have a plan and a feasibility study, then they can go to the city commission and present it.
They should be prepared for rejection because they are not in a position to make demands. Also, they should be prepared for the rewards when they are asking for a handup instead of a handout. Bismarck is a generous community, so they will have little room for excuses, if they have a plan and a study.
As I reflect back 68 years to what we had and what's available today, Ican't imagine what the future holds. The golf courses, walking paths, bike trails, the river, the theaters, bowling alley, shopping malls, libraries and, most of all, transportation.
With imagination, people can start enjoying things that are available.
