It is good that the plight of the dairy farmer is being told. The press has done a good job of reporting, but as a dairy farmer, I would like to tell the rest of the story.
Yes, we are only receiving half of what we received a year ago for the same product. For about six months in 2008, we received a great price for our milk, but the price we are getting now is the same price that we got in 1986.
What the public also needs to know is that our input costs have tripled and, in some cases, have increased as much as 10 times what they were in 1986.
The question for the public is could you live and prosper today making the same wages as 20 plus years ago? Farmers in every sector of agriculture do it every day.
