This is in response to the numerous letters to the editor denouncing President Barack Obama and our congressional delegation for taking decisive action during what could best be described as a worldwide economic collapse.
President Franklin Roosevelt, after being elected in 1932, took dramatic action to save our country from economic ruin or worse. Roosevelt went to work pumping money into the country with new jobs programs, protections for bank deposits and other bold moves that were decried by Republicans.
Roosevelt's predecessor, Herbert Hoover, a Republican who had Republican majorities in both houses of Congress at the time, did not believe in government intervention, and allowed what was a recession to grow into the Great Depression.
Some people either learn nothing from history or are ignorant of it. To do nothing during this economic crises, as all but three congressional Republicans have done, is to ensure this nation will face consequences that are far more dire than trying something. Or as my dad use to say, "a bad plan is better than no plan at all."
Could anyone nitpick the recent economic stimulus package and find faults? Sure, we all could, because there is no perfection when it comes to passing legislation.
I'm thankful President Obama was elected and is doing something to head off economic collapse, and that our North Dakota congressional delegation have been courageous enough to stand by him. Our modern-day Hooverite Republicans have the same answers they always have - do nothing or cut taxes on the rich.
