Like it or not, the climate is changing

An amusing letter to the editor recently quoted the former head of the Weather Channel as definitive proof that the climate is not changing. The letter writer, Bob Wetsch, fails to mention anything about the tens of thousands scientists from around the world, including numerous Nobel Prize winners, who have concluded that it is.

This is typical of "the Earth is flat" thinking of some in western North Dakota. Fortunately, our leaders in the energy sector, including Basin Electric and MDU, have taken a much more realistic view and have invested tens of millions of dollars to prepare for the changing circumstances in the energy industry. I don't know if it is man-made global warming or just global warming. However, as demonstrated throughout the world, our country and in our state's own backyard (Devils Lake), the climate is changing, and ignoring the facts of reality will not protect our children's environmental future.

Ironically, the letter even attacks Congressman Earl Pomeroy for saying he will vote in North Dakota's interest as climate change legislation comes before Congress. Whether Wetsch likes it or not, Pomeroy's record of standing up for our state is a well-established fact.
