The existing health care private insurance is broken. As you are quite aware, there are numerous examples everywhere. But I will cite one which just came to my attention last week.
I was in Walmart when my path crossed with a handsome young man holding his daughter. He was from Wing, where one brother and parents farm. He said the farm situation is not good because of prices, and he is unemployed. He told me his daughter's birthing costs were $18,000 and it was a normal, healthy birth, with wife and daughter spending only two days in the hospital.
In my mind, how can young people afford to have children? If they are to be insured, which company or business will sacrifice for them? Apparently our government can't.
A few bandages to our existing health coverage will not correct the long-term situation. The insurance companies and health care industry do not want to see change. After the current debate, they may initially make some changes in coverage, but will those changes hold into the long term? My assessment is no. We have what we now have because it's the insurance industry's answer to health care and they are profiting big time.
I have lived in France, Germany, and Romania and would accept their health care system over ours because ours is not inclusive and costs are out of control. Our health costs are pricing our business out of competitiveness. The insurance industry is socialism without control. Yes, I would like to see limits on liability but I know of no outlandish lawsuit against our competent doctors.
In Washington, the Democrats are in charge. If they can't muster the will to make long-term positive change, then I say make no change.
